What are these ants doing?

I was outside when I noticed a string of ants going back and forth. I couldn't find out exactly where they were coming from nor where they were heading to - only that the trail was leading straight to my house and to the front yard somewhere. I took a closer look and noticed they were carrying something that didn't quite look like food. So what's going on here? Should I be worried about some kind of infestation?
