We've got some wasps flying in and out of a dryer vent on the side of our house, and I THINK they're yellow jackets, however aren't yellow jackets known for being very aggressive if you go anywhere even close to the nest? These guys are letting me walk right up to the vent and watch them do their thing, just flying around me on the way out, and again on the way in, like they don't even care. Do they not become aggressive until the nest is actually completed? I could also be misidentifying them, as although I was able to get very close, they do move fast so it was hard to make out all the details, but from the pictures I can look up I do believe they are yellow jackets. I'm in upstate New York if that helps at all.
