Why do earwigs stand on the top of plants?

I've seen them in so many places it may have been random. I just found an earwig on my lawn on the very top of a small mustard plant (4 or 5 inches high). Back arched, pincers spread, at the highest point. What is it doing? Is this a thing, or is it just lost?
