Ex-exterminator needing a quick clarification

I've always been super interested in insects, and have pretty good knowledge of my local fauna because I was fortunate to be trained by a passionate entomologist. One thing that has been bugging me though, is a term he used when describing roaches.

He would say they rested in crevices due to being "thignomatic"(?). I always researched the things he would tell me, but this is a term I cannot find. I'm sure the issue is I've misheard the word (he had a rather thick accent) and now can't even come close to spelling it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd like to actually read on the subject.
