Maggot rain

Yesterday I was enjoying the first warm day of the year, when the strangest creature I’ve ever seen fell from the trees above me. My first though was “caterpillar with a tail”. Almost correct, I did some googling and learned the identity of the sky larvae. Rat tailed maggot. Drone fly larvae, they’re as ugly as the name suggests. That rat tail of there’s is a siphon they use to breath in the stagnant water they infest. So why did it fall out of the trees? And more importantly, why have two more fallen out of the trees since then?
