WHERE ARE THE SQUASH BEES

I have never seen a squash bee, and I desperately need to in order to truly live. I live in Southern California, you’d think I would have seen one before but I never have, even when growing squash and melons in my yard. I’ve decided to go all out this Spring, and I’m wondering if the bees have any preferences when it comes to squash plants? I have fences surrounding the yard but hopefully an abundance of the plant of their choice and clear ground will attract them. I’ve recently been looking into coyote melon or buffalo gourd (Cucurbita spp.) as they are native to my area, if a little rare. Would it be worth planting those over traditional agricultural squashes?
