I've included a picture as a reference for people who may not know what kind of beetle I'm referring to here. I live in Raleigh, NC and we've been having a lot of rain in the past week (a fact I feel may be relevant). Over the past 7 days, I have found 6 rhinoceros beetle larvae in my kitchen and/or dining room area in my apartment on the ground floor. They're all healthy, uninjured, etc larvae that move when touched; the larvae are fine. Some of them drag in a lot of mud, while others do not. My personal theory is that, even though a damp environment may be preferred, the amount sheer of rain in the past week is driving them inside because they tend to live in soil or dirt. (I'm sure it sounds like I must be exaggerating the amount of rain, but where I work in Chapel Hill, we've gotten thunderstorm warnings, I spun out while driving home a week ago, the drive to and from work has been horrendous, etc etc). I imagine if you live in the soil there may be a risk of drowning. However, I can't really prove my "rain drives them in" theory and it doesn't answer my big question: where is the point of entry? I'm sort of hesitant to bring this up to the apartment complex manager because I know it'll go to pest control and their answer will be to kill them. Killing them won't stop them from getting in and it's not like I think the larvae are really causing any problems. They're sort of annoying to find by now, but I just scoop them up in a paper towel, put them outside, and clean the floor where they were. When I search for information about beetle larvae in homes, it's usually about carpet beetles and your usual pests. Has anyone ever heard of or personally dealt with rhinoceros beetle larvae getting into their home and, if so, how did they stop it? Also, if you know of anywhere else I should ask this question where someone might be able to give me a good answer, please let me know! This has been driving me nuts! [link] [comments] |
