I was doing landscaping around my house which involved digging behind railroad ties i used as retaining walls then pushing them backache displacement, after digging behind it, the hole suddenly filled with paper wasps at least 20 some got in my pant leg and stung my calf repeatedly some got my neck and some just stung m my shirt. They are very painful and rank pretty high and Schmidt stinging pain index. I have however experienced a more painful sting from a flying insect. I live in Vermont. I can’t remember exactly what they looked liked but had a body shape similar to that of a wasp hornet or bee, pretty small (not a mud dauber) and were mostly black, I cannot recall if they had any yellow or other colors and they were very aggressive despite me not aggravating them. They made there nest underneath an elevated wood ramp to a public bathroom in a campground. They followed me many yards and kept stinging.
