My apartment has two windows. One faces a tiny parking area with no vegetation. The other, on the opposite side of the apartment, is feet from an orange tree.
When I put my houseplants on the sill of the window facing the parking lot, they get badly infested with aphids rapidly. I wash all the aphids off and treat the plants. If I put them somewhere else in the apartment after this, including on the windowsill by the tree, they are fine. If I put them back on the parking lot windowsill, they'll be covered in aphids again within half a day.
I am mystified as to where all these aphids could be coming from, given there are no plants near the offending window. As far as I am able to tell by Googling, aphids are known to feed only on plants, but I feel like they must be having a party in the building walls or something.
Can anyone make sense of this?
If it helps, so far the aphids haven't cared for thyme and fennel, but have gone crazy for mustard, lemon basil and purple cayenne pepper plants.
