I’m a biologist and huge insect nerd. Lately I’ve been looking for a new hobby, and I remember doing an insect collection in a bio class, and I really enjoyed it and thought about extending that hobby into my personal life. I have been having some second thoughts, however, about if it’s right to capture insects for display. It seems like when I think about collecting them, even though I plan to do so for more than just having an art piece on the wall, it still feels weird.
As a scientist and environmentalist I know they can be used as a citizen science tool, so that it feels like it has some usefulness other than just for display. But honestly, I don’t know how to use it as a citizen science tool apart from donating it to a museum.
This topic has probably been asked often in this sub, but I was wondering if people could give me their two cents about insect collecting, if I’m being naive and overthinking it and what you do to help you stop overthinking it yourself! I almost feel guilty about collecting even though I know I would do it responsibly.
