Injured or dying Jerusalem crickets inside my home

So I keep waking up to find injured or dying Jerusalem crickets in my living room. We live in a converted basement in Southern California which has taken some water damage over the years. I understand the little buggers are looking for shelter and warmth but what I don’t understand is why they are practically dead or dying. Are they sustaining injuries while they’re trying to squeeze in thru the many gaps and crevices? My husband usually escorts them out to the yard since he won’t let me kill anything “harmless” but is it too late for them? I hate to see the ugly little creatures agonize. Is it more humane to just step on them and end their suffering?
