Why did I see so many caterpillars crossing the path yesterday?

In the Midlands in UK. Mostly Ruby Tigers (I think) but I also saw a Vapourer and a green thing which had been squashed but might have been an Angle Shades or something. It's like they all picked one day to make a mad break for it to the other side of the verge! There was no shortage of foodplants on the other side either. Something to do with the weather changing maybe, I thought? Like they all respond to the same temperature/humidity or something, maybe they felt like the first frost was coming and wanted to pupate? I don't know why they couldn't just do that on the side of the path they started on though. It wasn't in one isolated spot either, loads of them across a stretch of a km or so.

Thanks!
